Ray is a bonefied software dude who participated in his college's solar car team. Owning and driving an electric car has been a persistent want ever since. Being an avid "Maker" he was far more interested in being part of building his own EV rather than just picking one up off the lot.  More importantly, he wanted one that was more fun to drive than what the OEM's are offering.

The search was on for a donor. He chose a 2002 Mazda Miata.  These cars are a great choice for a number of reasons. Most important is the broad availability of parts and upgrades. Since inception, the Miata has been a top choice among weekend and professional racers. Originally equiped with a 4 cylinder engine, many owners have squeezed a variety of more powerful engines into these cars. There were no difficulties in converting the car to electric that weren't already addressed by prior engine swaps.

From the outset, the chief two goals were to attain a usable range as near to 100 miles as possible and to have performance better than original and better than a coworker's 370Z Nismo.

We installed 80 Calb CA100fi cells for a total pack capacity of over 25kWh. This powers the Soliton1 1000amp controller that feeds the Netgain Warp 9. A very simple recipe. The controller is tuned to limit the motor voltage to 170 volts as per manufacturer recommended spec, giving a max power output to 170kw, or 221 horsepower and a projected 220 ft/lb of torque available.  We plan to test these numbers on the dynomometer in August.

In all, the Miata weighs in without driver at 2,874 lbs.
